ASHA 2011 Wrap-up

SpeechTechie

The site ended up working well (after jumping through many wirey hoops to get Internet access at this frankly tech-challenged convention) as a guide for our presentation, rather than a PowerPoint. What a trip the ASHA convention was, as always. It was really a whirlwind this year as it seemed I had a ton of people I wanted to see and talk with. In between doing last preps for our own session and chatting with folks all over the place, I went to some great sessions.

Best free web tool- Glogster EDU remains an accessible free tool, especially for SLPs who can share the one free login with many students on our caseload. It''s that time already. The Edublog Awards were started about 7 years ago to counteract the trend of blocking social media in school districts and celebrate the educational power of these resources. Obviously social media has been transformative for me and my practice and I wanted to participate for that reason again this year.

How Access to Technology Can Create Equity in Schools

Digital Promise

Students can access learning materials outside of school. One of the most straightforward ways that technology contributes to equity in schools is ensuring that every student has access to learning materials, even outside of the classroom. Providing access to technology is important but not a complete solution when it comes to getting rid of systemic disparities caused by issues like income inequality, geographic isolation, or discrimination.

Our labs run full throttle each and every day, while we try to provide students with access to these resources. We have even opened our WiFi so that students can access the Internet with their own personal devices.

Student Voice Matters

A Principal's Reflections

You press the power button and within eight seconds you have access to the World Wide Web. This is in contrast to the laptops teachers have access to now, which take what seems like the whole class period just to start up. The value of the Chromebooks is so high because of accessibility.

The Future is Here: Take Advantage of It

A Principal's Reflections

We highly value equity in terms of access to technology. At New Milford High School we have begun to leverage technology that many students possess. This has led to a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) initiative, where students are encouraged to bring in their mobile learning devices, which include cell phones or personal computing devices (laptops, tablets, iPod Touches, eReaders, etc).

Curriculum 2.0

A Principal's Reflections

As technology and access to information continue to evolve at a rapid pace my question is when will we see curricula in schools shift accordingly? I came across this interesting video this morning entitled "Curriculum 2.0". Check it out below: This video, as well as the information found at the Curriculum 2.0 wiki , reinforces what I and many others believe, that technology is just one of many tools to assist in engaging students in the 21st Century.

Instructional Upgrade

A Principal's Reflections

The World Language Department at New Milford High School has recently gained access to Voki Classroom , a website in which students create their own avatars (graphical representation of the user), and use them to improve oral communication in the target language. With the first month of the school year in the books, I am extremely pleased with how more staff members are embracing educational technology and effectively integrating a variety of tools into instruction.

Small Changes, Huge Results

A Principal's Reflections

We had to give up a certain amount of control in order to successfully implement a bring-your-own-device program where students are granted access to the school''s wireless network during the day using their computing devices. School leaders across the country are meticulously planning for the upcoming year. This process has become more difficult as mounting challenges such as budget cuts and what seems like a relentless attack on the profession of education have taken their toll on staff moral.

Summer Learning Loss: A National Dilemma

A Principal's Reflections

As a result of a recent $10,000 donation to New Milford High School all students in grades 9-11 have access to Study Island in mathematics and language arts for the next three years. Certain 12th grade AP students will also have access in the following AP courses: Chemistry, Biology, U.S. As the summer break quickly approaches in the Northeast I have come across various articles focusing on summer learning loss and the negative impact that time off has on students.

Learning Shouldn't Stop When the Last Bell Rings

A Principal's Reflections

Each of the ten tablets (5 iPads and 5 Samsung Galaxy tabs) came with 3G access for the duration of the pilot program. The iPad helped because I had Internet access and could read the book from my iPad if I didn’t have access to a computer. As I stated earlier, having reference apps such as the periodic table and dictionary/thesaurus are great because you can access them quickly.

What is the Most Effective Classroom Technology?

A Principal's Reflections

I believe for a specific type of technology to be successful in a classroom it must be multidimensional, cost-effective, easy to use, readily accessible by all, and most importantly engages students. This is the million dollar question! Like most educators in the blogging world I see the inherit value in educational technology. Combined with sound pedagogical practices, the effective integration of technology has the ability to engage learners in a variety of ways.
