Autistic self-advocacy organizations and autistic activists have long criticized autism awareness initiatives. Some 11 years ago, autistic activist, Ari Ne’eman, then president of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), successfully campaigned to shut down a stigmatising campaign posted on billboards and other sites in New York City. It is time to listen to, and learn from, autistic people’s experiences and expertise – with regard to research, practice and advocacy.

An open-access advocacy group on Wednesday sent a formal filing to the U.S. Department of Justice opposing the proposed merger of two of the world’s largest textbook publishers, Cengage and McGraw-Hill Education. The 49-page brief argues that the merger would hurt competition, limit innovation and could lead to an eventual “platform monopoly” in education, just as Facebook dominates social networking.
