“Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action.” – W.J. Cameron. Thanksgiving is an important event that teaches us about collaboration and acceptance between two vastly different cultures and this is definitely an important history our students can benefit from. Thanksgiving provides us the opportunity to teach students about what it means to be a good citizen and humanitarian.

When I was in high school poetry was my least preferred subject. And I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the favorite student of my poetry teacher either. The reason for this was very simple: I didn’t have the necessary affinity towards poetry and I always had a hard time understanding and learning poems. Although I tried many times to memorize poems for the sake of my grades, I never truly succeeded.

Tech directors are a busy lot these days. With big changes to federal funding models, pressing bandwidth needs (on campus and at home), and the everlasting conversation between IT and instruction departments, there’s a lot on their plates. No technology was used, but I thought I’d share anyway… the outcome looked great. It’s nearly Halloween and in my school we had to make decorations for the school. My class made creepy hands! Click to view slideshow. How do you make them? First, ask your students to get into partners. One must put on a plastic glove. Next, the other pupil gets tape (coloured sticky tape or masking tape works well) and ‘mummifies’ their partner.

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Students for Fair Admissions, which is suing the university for allegedly discriminating against Asian American applicants, will have access to “academic, extracurricular, demographic and other information” from all undergrads who applied to Harvard between the fall 2009 and spring 2015, omitting names and Social Security numbers.

The good folks at Florida Virtual Campus have released the latest version of their Student Textbook Survey. There’s already been some great coverage (e.g., Phil Hill ). A quick look at Table 1 on page 11 seems to justify that claim: However, inter-occular speculation is failing us here.

Tired old souls often argue for the world to stay the same. They argue against their better judgement. They argue even though, somewhere hidden behind the rhetoric and rage, they know they are wrong. It’s rarely the exact issue they are arguing over. It is usually a personal battle with a changing world. They are losing the reins.
