Technology: the savior of education?

iLearn Technology

I had a great time helping other teachers learn how to use technology, and coming up with ideas for how they could integrate it into their classrooms. I decided that I was going to take all of the curriculum home over the summer and create supplemental guides using technology to help teach what wasn’t in the curriculum. The back of my MDX filled, I had a goal: to leverage technology to solve this problem. I had their faces in my mind as I wrote these technology guides.

Using Technology to Differentiate Instruction

iLearn Technology

One of the major benefits of using technology in the classroom is the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of every student in every lesson. Technology makes it possible to pace lessons appropriately for each student’s learning level and can be used to promote learning in the multiple intelligences. Below you will find website suggestions that address the different learning styles in your classroom with the help of technology: Verbal-Linguistic.

Wildly Audacious Goals and the Power of One

iLearn Technology

In 2010, I thought that technology might be the savior of education. I created the Learning Genome Project as an attempt to make it possible to personalize education for every child. This project took a detour when I realized that, in the United States, we exist within a system that has not been designed to educate the individual. But Bodo comes at the problem of education from a very different direction.

Metanoia- the journey of changing one’s mind, heart, self, or way of life (basically what #edu is all about!)

iLearn Technology

The problem with education reform is that we keep attempting to change surface level systems and hoping for deep systemic change as a result. What we actually end up with is new standards, new curricula (usually replacing one one-size-fits-all with another one-size-fits-all), new technology initiatives, more professional development, added “rigorous” expectations, new standardized tests, new assessment systems, and new buzz words. That education should be rigorous.

The Letter Project: Spreading good to girls through handwritten letters

iLearn Technology

As an educator I know that when we take away all of the labels that we use to categorize each other, when we look each other in the eye and listen to each other’s stories, we find out that we are all human after all. The last week has been heartbreaking to watch unfold. My heart aches over the fear, the divisiveness, the “us” vs. “them” mentality. The stripping away of humanity.

“What if we started a school?” – Come see us in action!

iLearn Technology

So often I see the same sentiment from educators involved in education dialogue, “Wouldn’t it be nice if a school were doing _. ” As an educator, I felt the same. What if we had 1:1 technology? For all of you who have dreamed a different kind of school, a different kind of education, this conference is for you. What is Sacred in Education? What is the first step for agency in education?

Building Student Agency: Multiple Intelligence Strengths

iLearn Technology

What it is: The Learning Genome Project started nearly 8 years ago in response to a sense of urgency to make education more about those it serves: students. In the process of building the Learning Genome, I came to a realization that even if this perfect tool existed, there wasn’t the infrastructure in schools to fully utilize it. This led to the start of a school, Anastasis Academy.

What makes your school/PD/conference different?

iLearn Technology

But in education, we make a lot of decisions without these specific students-with-names in mind. When we talk about education, too often the focus is on learning all the right things, equipping kids with the right content and answers. It is about finding the educators who can draw students out, who can foster humanity and connection. We can’t let technology be the teacher.

Wait, what just happened?! (Launching a Conference)

iLearn Technology

The 5Sigma Education Conference was one of the best professional experiences I’ve had. It was the connections with others who are innovative and amazing in their education space. It was the stories told, the laughter shared, it was the discovery that others are doing the hard thing in education and we share the same struggles and joys. Even the things we do that share common education language (inquiry), look very different here.

Digital Badges: credentialing the things that make us fully human

iLearn Technology

As educators, we watched our student’s love for reading dissipate in favor of a digital badge. Perhaps my favorite moment of Digital Badge Summit was the bold declaration that digital badges could be a great equalizer in education. An APS student spoke toward this reality as he described his own education. As a student with learning needs, he often received a report card that revealed all of the places that he was failing within his education.

Anatomy of a Learner Profile

iLearn Technology

Perhaps the most disheartening outcome of the systematization of education is the way that it dehumanizes classrooms. Emboldened by being ‘the best,’ our education system has become blinded to the individual. May we, as educators, stand up and defend the humanity in our classrooms! Of making education more equitable for all. Ignoring who a child is misses the core of what education must be about.
