Upon getting on Twitter in 2009, I was not only baffled about how to use the social media site but also about all the symbols associated with it. Before Twitter I referred to this as the “pound sign” on the telephone and only used it as such. Let’s start by defining what a hashtag (#) is in the sense of social media.
