We went to the local library and had these big presentations set up, and we actually published a book with all of their biographies and short stories with the heroes in them.

Unfortunately, this job can be easier said than done, especially when teachers are required to teach from a basal reading program, which according to Mark Weakland in “ Super Core! elementary schools.”. I went one step further to round out our unit and added other traditional literature from our classroom library.

So when it comes to research, are you still directing kids toward your grandmother’s resources — encyclopedias, reference books, and museums? They search based on subject matter, video topic, Common Core or state standard, or simply browse a list of videos. Students 9-13 may prefer the younger-oriented, Fact Monster.

In Weslaco, Texas, Superintendent Ruben Alejandro has launched an early literacy program called “Zero to Three Weslaco Reads,” which provides access to an online library of digital books called myON for the entire Weslaco community. Napa County isn’t alone in focusing on children who aren’t even old enough for school.
