Student Voice Matters

A Principal's Reflections

'This past September I was fortunate enough to attend a professional development program on the Chromebook at the Google offices in New York City. At the conclusion of the workshop, I immediately began to think about the potential of this computing device in my school. However, something was missing. The missing piece to making a decision of this magnitude was the thoughts and advice from the most important constituency in schools, the students.

My Edublog Awards Nominations for 2011

SpeechTechie

'It''s that time already. The Edublog Awards were started about 7 years ago to counteract the trend of blocking social media in school districts and celebrate the educational power of these resources. Obviously social media has been transformative for me and my practice and I wanted to participate for that reason again this year. Additionally, winning the 2010 Best New Blog award in this incentive brought SpeechTechie a lot of recognition and new readership, so THANKS again to those who supporte

A convenient untruth

Learning with 'e's

What do you think is the teacher's worst enemy? Some would say lack of time. Others would say unsupportive leadership, or the dreaded government inspection. Rigid curriculum, lack of resources and bad student behaviour may also be high on the list for many educators. For me, the worst enemy is bad theory. Bad theory, when accepted without challenge, can lead to bad practice.

The Kindle Fire - So Close. A Review with Education in Mind

The Learning Revolution Has Begun

'I have had really high hopes for the Kindle Fire , as an Android tablet lover, especially as it might work as an education device. Amazon is big enough and well-positioned enough to bring to market an inexpensive tablet that combines 1) a virtually unlimited library of public domain and traditional books with 2) access to the Web, and 3) an open development app platform.

Tools of the trade

Learning with 'e's

I was quite impressed by Joyce Seitzinger's Professional Learning Environment (PLN) model that she presented at Deakin University in Melbourne this week. The first slide on the left shows a quadrant model in which she has used a work/office metaphor to define four discrete functions of a PLN. The first, the Staffroom is quite public, calling on high levels of communication and high profile, and involves the use of microblogging tools such as Twitter.

ASHA Convention Wrap-Up: An Open Letter on the Importance of Open Technology.

SpeechTechie

'I really love going to the ASHA convention (despite ASHAs tendency to write it in print without the definite article the , I have to insist on it). I''ve gone 6 years in a row: Miami, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, Philly, and now San Diego. Clearly I really like the travel, the vibe of learning and whom I get to see at the convention. This is not to say that there couldn''t be some improvements each year, and I struggled with whether to write and publish this post lest it seem negative.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Fabulous learning spaces

Learning with 'e's

I have been keenly interested in the design of learning spaces for some time. I guess my background as a designer (I attended Hereford College of Art and Design in the 70s) and my professional life as an educator draw me back to this again and again. It was with great pleasure then, that I was able to visit Albany Senior High School in North Auckland yesterday to talk to a group of educators from across the city.
