edWeb Supports Edcamp Phoenix

Edcamps are a great way for educators to meet with peers in their area and share great ideas. edWeb was pleased to be able to support our friends Peggy George and Deirdre Shetler with EdCamp Phoenix. Edcamp Phoenix has come and gone, and what an event it was! Everyone was grateful for a Squirrels lanyard with a 20% off coupon for Reflector 2, an app to project mobile devices to a classroom screen. Massive "Mobile MakerSpace" Resource

Adjusting Course

Since we didn't have the luxury of designating an extra classroom as a “MakerSpace” we opted for a mobile-cart model. Fast forward to today, and we now have a fleet of 15-20 Mobile MakerSpace carts stored in our Media Center and surrounding hallways. Guiding Principles: Here are the things we’ve continued to think about since the inception of our Mobile MakerSpaces. This is not a technology initiative.)

Digital Tools to Mobilize a Community to a Goal

Tech Helpful

Today, as I was looking over the scope and sequence that ISTE has put out as plausible technology integration standards to support the ISTE student standards I found myself stuck on one standard and feeling the weight of the pros and cons stacking up equally on both sides of my brain as I wrestled with this idea: "Use digital tools such as blogs, websites and social media to crowdsource, crowdfund and mobilize a community toward a goal."

A true gift from SHEG: DIY digital literacy assessments and tools for historical thinking

You may remember Stanford History Education Group (SHEG) for its groundbreaking and utterly depressing report, Evaluating Information: The Cornerstone of Online Civic Reasoning. In the November 2016 Executive Summary , the researchers shared: When thousands of students respond to dozens of tasks there are endless variations. That was certainly the case in our experience.

Give Teachers Credit: They Know Learning Is Social

My job is to interview and survey the pioneers, investors and stakeholders who drive technological change, share their stories, and collaborate with very smart people to build and distribute tools that help everyone else get involved. There is a lot of noise in edtech today, mostly coming from technology and consumer marketing-oriented companies. This approach won’t work with passionate educators who recognize that their world is changing because of technology.

The Greatest Challenge Facing School Leaders in a Digital World

As founding director of CASTLE (the Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education), the nation’s only university center dedicated to the technology needs of school leaders, I have had the good fortune to work with administrators all over the world on digital leadership issues. In such schools, replicative uses of technology are quite common, but transformative uses that leverage the unique affordances of technology are quite rare.

3 Misconceptions About Innovation in Education

The Principal of Change

Innovation is about how you use technology. My belief is that this happens because a lot of technologies that are advertised are deemed innovative, which can be true. But innovation is a way of thinking, not simply the way we use technology. That being said, there are many ways that educators are innovative without using technology. Look at EdCamp. “Innovation” is one of the most used words in education right now.

Digital Equity in Rural School Districts

Providing families with used school-issued Chromebooks, adding access points outside the school buildings, and collaborating with community partners on projects such as youth centers and public libraries are providing students and the entire community with access to technology.

There is no box

The high school district was fortunate enough to recognize that to make forward progress with technology, they had to make a change. The main reason: the shift towards authentic technology integration into everyday instruction is happening right now. Successful implementation of technology integration requires new ways of thinking and looking at what is really needed to provide tech services to the classroom. Branching out in to non-tradtional (like edCamps) is better.
