Empowering Students to Be Self-Advocates

A Principal's Reflections

'Right before the holiday break I was contacted by Dwight Carter , the Principal of Gahanna Lincoln High School in Ohio. He wanted to pick my brain about technology integration strategies that I have used at New Milford High School in New Jersey. Somewhere in our conversation that spanned multiple areas of educational leadership, we talked about how we regularly meet with groups of students in our respective schools.

Leadership Stared Me In The Face Today. And I Liked What I Saw

The Web20Classroom

'A colleague and I were doing a workshop at a school today. I was filling in for someone who had been out and the content were we covering, I thought, would be better if we taught it together. And that also allowed one of us to teach while the other floated around the room to help teachers who got behind or need a little extra encouragement. The workshop was just like any other.

The King's Speech

SpeechTechie

'I may be seeming to be going off-format by sharing a movie review, but technology is a broad term, and one that certainly plays a part in The King''s Speech. There is not a lot in pop culture that is so explicitly about communication disorders, which may be just one reason why our profession is not well understood, and I think we should be very grateful for The King''s Speech.

Maybe We Need To Get Back To Our Roots.

The Web20Classroom

'I have been less and less on Twitter and reading blogs. Why? Negativity. The talk about education has shifted. When I first entered this space it was about connecting and sharing. People highlighted what was working in their classroom in the hopes others would follow suit. I was amazing each day to wake up and watch connections being made and classrooms sharing knowledge with each other.

Remember and Reflect on Your High Calling

EdTechSandyK

'Credit goes to Vicki Davis, the Cool Cat Teacher , for inspiring me to write this post. She posted the video below to her own blog this morning, and although I had seen it in the past, I was encouraged to revisit it. I''m so very glad I did, too. As someone who does not work directly with students very often, I need reminders like this to keep me mindful of why I do what I do and help me "keep on keepin'' on" during tough or discouraging times.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

I am saying this post is Part 1 of 2 about some community trips I recently made with some social skills groups to Dunkin''s, but that''s a little deceptive because I have written about Dunkin'' Donuts before. Let''s call it DD for the rest of the post so I don''t have to keep typing that, and this post is not really about that wonderful pink and orange place anyway.
