Brainstorming is an important process students need to learn to do when innovating, creating, and problem-solving with technology. Brainstorming helps students come up with ideas, organizes ideas, and provides a roadmap for projects. We need to expose students to various types of brainstorming techniques, such as concept mapping, storyboarding, sketchnoting, sketch outlines, audio recording thoughts, etc., so they discover which techniques work best for them.

Written by Dr. Jared Scherz, TeacherCoach. When I was eleven, I went on a rock climbing expedition in Boulder Colorado. I paced nervously before the first climb, as the instructors readied the equipment. From a sharp reprimand, I was jolted out of my nervous daydream. “Don’t step on the rope.” the instructor shouted. Befuddled by this command, I wondered how a rope that was nearly as thick as my leg, could be effected by a barely 80-pound kid.

As teachers and administrators, our goal is compliance. However, what we really should be striving to develop are self-sufficient classrooms where students are driving the learning. Ideally, by surpassing compliance goals and student-driven learning, we can get to an even more important goal — critical thinking. But achieving that goal isn’t easy.

Bullying has, unfortunately, become a common term in today’s education world. All students get into the occasional squabble or call another student a name—but bullying is different. Bullying is defined by negative actions, which are intentional, repeated, negative, and show an imbalance of power between the students. We’ve come a long way in the past few decades in acknowledging bullying and confronting it as a real problem in our schools.

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Our staff created a "lip sync battle" video as a reward for students. Today is the official "release day" for the video and we hope it makes students smile as much as we smiled while creating it. One thing the video doesn't show is the incredible work our entire team does to create a culture where relationships, innovation, and learning come together in such a fun and collaborative manner.

Cookie Monster is all wound up. The Count has him hold up his furry blue fingers, count them (of course), and blow on each one in turn as if he were blowing out a birthday candle. Afterward, Cookie declares, in his familiar growly voice, that he feels much better. “Hey! Me feel terrific! Me calm. Me relaxed.” You won’t be catching this scene on HBO or PBS.
This white paper examines and proposes revisions to the "Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education" introduced by Arthur Chickering and Zelda Gamson in 1987 for today's technology-driven world.

Thus far, I have not seen any augmented reality apps that have struck me as super-useful. Sky Guide AR is pretty cool, but unfortunately I don’t get a lot of quality time with the night sky. Obviously it’s early days yet, and I expect there will be plenty of amazingly useful apps in the near future. (Wait–if realtime translation “counts” as AR, then I guess that’s definitely pretty useful.).

It was an honor to have a chance to write an article for EdSurge about The Must-Have Tools in my Flipped Classroom. This article is not about the screencasting tools I use to create my flipped classroom videos. Actually, my whole point in the piece is that it is not so much about the tools as it is about the data you can unlock when you find the right tools.
