On ZTC, OER, and a More Expansive View

Iterating Toward Openness

As the movement grew and more people began advocating for the adoption of OER in place of traditionally copyrighted materials in classes, some advocates chose to make cost the primary focus of their advocacy. This choice rotated licensing into a secondary priority. Materials that were openly licensed and free were the OER we had spent the last decade advocating for. Other schools have OER policies and OER degree programs.

From here to there: Musings about the path to having good OER for every course on campus

Iterating Toward Openness

I spend most of my time doing fairly tactical thinking and working focused on moving OER adoption forward in the US higher education space. I made what was probably the clearest statement of my vision for the future of learning materials in my Shuttleworth Fellowship application several years ago: My long-term goal is to create a world where OER are used pervasively throughout primary, secondary, and post-secondary schools. My end goal isn’t to increase OER adoption.

I recently had the honor of traveling to the MIT campus in Boston and participating in a panel discussion on Open Education Resources (OER) at The Sixth Conference of MIT''s Learning International Networks Consortium (LINC) with three illustrious advocates of these open resources: Nicole Allen, Philipp Schmidt, and panel moderator Steve Carson. The Cost Trap, Part 3

Iterating Toward Openness

In my recent post I asked us each to consider what “what is the real goal of our OER advocacy?” Ismael tweeted: My own take: these are two complementary approaches to #OER that should enrich each other, not exclude (or even blame) each other. As someone concerned with equality, I like #OER as a way to make teaching cheaper. As an educator, I like #OER as a tool for transforming learning. I settled on OER-enabled pedagogy.

Can Technology in the Classroom Replace Expensive Textbooks

But these are secondary causes. Now post-secondary tuition fee provides more revenue than public appropriations. If educational institutes start adopting OERs in classrooms, students will be able to save a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on purchasing textbooks and rental subscriptions. Although rentals are a good option approved by educational institutes, OER is yet to be widely accepted by educational institutes. Provide Access to K-12 Libraries.

Top Hat Buys Canadian Textbook Business to Compete With Publishers in Digital Courseware

Should the Nelson deal pass, Top Hat will boast more than 1,000 titles in its library. For Nelson, this sale marks its first step in its “strategic decision to withdraw from the post-secondary market,” it said in an announcement.

Colleges Are Striking Bulk Deals With Textbook Publishers. Critics Say There Are Many Downsides.

And of course there are other vendors, like Elsevier and Wiley (like Jones Soda and RC) and openly-licensed resources known as OER, or open education resources (which are something like a Sodastream homebrew). Even though the per-item costs with the bulk courseware arrangements are usually lower than the retail price, the switch eliminates the ability for students to find a used or free alternative from a friend or library.

Discussion went in some interesting angles, such as secondary education. One person thought shifting tertiary school content down to secondary could help reduce adjunctification, by (I think) reducing teaching hours in colleges. Several participants pointed out limitations on faculty time which block creation and even adoption of OER. For example , Kristin Vogel : “Libraries ally, champion and offer expertise on this very value.

I wanted to ask you about OERs. In terms of open access [journals] like [Public Library of Science]… they're leading edge. When I go and do young adult tours, and I go to secondary schools, I meet students who've read Little Brother, and they're like, "How do I hack my school's censorware?" It’s not unheard of for an instructor to tee up a YouTube video for a lesson, only to have the content blocked by the school or district’s censorware.
