Recognizing the Valedictorian in All

A Principal's Reflections

'Yesterday I attended the Bergen County Valedictorian breakfast where New Milford High School''s top student was honored. It was a great event and I am so proud of the accomplishments that are clearly apparent amongst all of the top students in my area. The valedictorians and salutatorians for that matter are recognized for their achievement of academic greatness at events like this and commencement ceremonies across the country.

Professional Development And The Modern Teacher

The Web20Classroom

'My district is changing website providers over the summer. In anticipation of the change our teachers have been learning how to move their content from their current page to their new one. For most this is just another task in an otherwise busy day. For some of our teachers it is one more stressful thing to do. You see, we just changed providers 4 years ago.

Promotion of Learning Beyond School

A Principal's Reflections

'The other night I was invited to attend the New Milford Girl Scouts Awards Ceremony as a "dignitary". As I sat there and listened to the accomplishments of each Troop I was amazed by the service and authentic learning experiences these girls were being exposed to. Their intrinsic motivation to give back to the community and others was inspiring. I quickly realized that the only true dignitaries in the room were the girls being recognized for their incredible accomplishments.

Unofficial first day of summer

Connecting 2 the World

Memorial Day in the US (the last Monday of May) is the unofficial start to summer. Most of the country will have already finished up school last week and will be finishing school this week. But New York state doesn't end until the end of June. Growing up, this was always the toughest time of year as we were expected to keep focused on the end of the school year, tests, and finishing up the last bits that we did not yet cover.

How Something Simple Became So Powerful.

The Web20Classroom

'In terms of teaching, this can be the hardest time of year. Yeah, the beginning of the year can be tough. Even that middle between late January to March can be tougher. But if you ask the teachers in my building this time of year is brutal. Our state testing is over. We are in the midsts of re-testing students who didn''t get it the first time. (And that is a whole other issue for another day.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Bad Credit Hotel

SpeechTechie

'It''s not quite as scary as that hotel from The Shining. The Bad Credit Hotel from the US Treasury would be a fun exploration for MS/HS students, particularly after providing a background context, perhaps with the engaging Common Craft video on Borrowing Money. The site provides you with a creepy/funny tour of a number of aspects of credit, and would be especially appropriate for students studying some functional math or budgeting, etc.
