Difficult decisions have had to be made regarding grading, making funds available to get technology in the hands of disadvantaged kids, getting school work to kids where the digital divide could not be overcome, and figuring out how to provide professional learning support virtually. Technology plays a huge role, which is why all efforts need to be made to eliminate the digital divide. To create empowering opportunities for all kids that involve more ownership over their learning requires us to think beyond synchronous learning that is just online. The key, however, is balance.

A move to real personalized learning at scale is the most logical step. At the same time, the digital divide has to be tackled where all learners have equitable access to a device, reliable WIFI, and quality resources. That’s the way we’ve always done it ( TTWWADI ) inhibits change Everyone has been presented with a clean slate.

Even though many of us have been beating the drum for years regarding this issue, there is such a long way to go when it comes to closing the digital divide. Movement matters more than ever if learning is the goal. Even in more affluent areas, one cannot assume equitable access. Think of this as direct instruction on paper.

As the Coronavirus has changed the landscape of education, I have become more and more aware of inequity and the digital divide. Over seven years ago I worked with our District Technology Director and Superintendent to create a 1:1 e-learning program that would be used to make up snow days. This will be important in the future!
