In a nutshell, Cambridge Analytica, was a corporation that used Facebook data and had permission to look at about a quarter million accounts, but because of the way Facebook sets itself up, whenever you give permission to Facebook, you’re also basically giving permission for Facebook to look at your friends. Robots won’t replace you , the press repeatedly said. Unsaid: robots will just de-professionalize , outsource , or privatize the work. Or, as the AI makers like to say, robots will make us all work harder (and no doubt, with no unions, cheaper). A teacher in front of a blackboard. Don’t worry, teachers.

At the time, I wrote about the importance of APIs; the issues surrounding data security and privacy; the appeal of platforms for users and businesses; and the education and tech companies who were well-positioned (or at least wanting) to become education platforms.
