In 2010, he pooled his own money with KKR, a private equity firm, to launch Weld North , which has since acquired another 16 edtech companies (and invested in 4 others). The deal comes after KKR’s allotted capital for its investment in Weld North, which came from KKR’s 2006 fund, had run out. But expect more deals to come.

I taught fifth-graders at College View Elementary School. In 2001 I had a one-to-one classroom with Palm Pilots, and in 2005 I started one of the first podcasts from an elementary school. In 2006 I became a self-employed consultant. Teaching in a classroom for the year has reinvigorated my passion for helping teachers.

I came to the Cobb County School District in 2006. My 16, 17 and 18-year old students were entering my class reading at an elementary level. Personalized learning is the new buzzword—edtech companies are after it and teachers toss it around as often as possible. The most critical issue was always the learning gaps.
