On one day in August before the students came, and again in January of this year we set up Edcamp style PD days. While our PD days weren't like the traditional Edcamp style (we actually came up with the choices instead of the teachers making the choices), the teachers found the days to be useful.

I posed an #Edchat Topic recently based on a number of studies I have been reading about that are claiming millions of dollars are being spent, or wasted, on professional development, while very few teachers are benefitting from it. The Unconference or the Edcamp Model is completely different. Conclusion.

Then in the morning I went back and asked if I could lead a small group to talk about formative assessments and how we could use the clickers for that. Several of our divisions like Title I, Social Studies and others have taken whole days and run them like a mini conference. The presenter leading did little to engage us.

In this article a study from Harvard Business School is cited which showed that when participants were allowed to reflect on a test, did remarkably better the on the next assessment.
