Kerri Lemoie Part of the reaction was disbelief, since the Open Badges platform was launched back in 2011 to great fanfare (it was originally called Mozilla Open Badges, but Mozilla has since transferred coordination of the standard to IMS Global Learning Consortium). The fact that [the patent] got granted is shocking.

But I digress… technology, specifically in the form of micro-credentials (sometimes called digital badging) has emerged not only as a powerful, accessible and appropriate way to learn online, but is also allows teachers to manage their time and resources better (keep in mind many teachers pay for PD out their own pocket).

” To help increase digital literacy awareness in underserved communities, Broadband Rhode Island , a partner with RIFLI, created a curriculum in 2011 for adult education teachers to promote digital literacy among adult learners. At the end of each course, RIFLI staff award digital badges to the students.
