I use social media to share the things I've learned via blogs to help others, I've asked people to join me at educational events like Edcamp Gig City and CoffeeEDU, I've asked people to support me in my JDRF walks to find a cure for type 1 diabetes, and more recently I've reached out to an entire city to help me find my lost dog.

The enthusiasm shared by educators who understand that social media will forever impact their lives and practice is very reminiscent of the vibe expressed by dot-commers two decades ago during the first wave of the Internet boom—this is a very good thing. I’ve served as both a journalist and participant within each movement.

When I got connected on social media, my lens was expanded and I became aware of more organizations, as well as their supporting tools and resources. EdCamp Foundation. During my time as a public school employee, I’d occasionally hear about educational organizations that were working to support schools in some capacity.

The Edublog awards are an effort to "promote and demonstrate the educational value of social media," particularly as some school districts block blogs and Twitter. Best open PD / unconference / webinar series- Edcamp ! They are on my mind this weekend for some reason. So, with only a little commentary, here are my noms.

Social Media and Connected Learning. On Saturday morning, during the “Saved by Twitter” session, I watched complete strangers huddle in groups to discuss social media, their use of Twitter, the challenges involved in using social media and I witnessed a few people send their first tweet or use a hashtag for the first time.
