That being said, if you’re using a piece of technology that’s free, it’s likely that your personal data is being sold to advertisers or at the very least hoarded as a potential asset (and used, for example, to develop some sort of feature or algorithm). It works well, that is, if you disregard student data privacy and security.

Me personally, I don't want the future of education to be more monitored, data-mined, analyzed, predicted, molded, controlled. Is it the vast corpus of data that the company has amassed — decades of essays and theses and Wikipedia entries that it uses to assess student work? I don't want education to look that way now, but it does.

And the MOOC numbers look like they’re rising. Unless the worm turns globally, I’d expect planet MOOC to keep growing in 2016. Big data and data analytics : interest in this is widespread and has some hefty power behind it. Social media is something higher ed is ambivalent about.

edX - www.edex.org - MOOC site, courses are all free, people who teach the courses are from Harvard, MIT, Berkeley, University of Texas, etc. Coursera is another option for higher ed MOOCS. Close to 10% of students got into MIT by excelling in a MOOC. Workshop needs measurable goals, follow-up, and results based on data.
