On report cards, grades are presented in the new system, but on transcripts the school provides a conversion to a traditional letter grade — an element that has meant grades are easy for parents to understand. As of mid-2018, 17 states were in “advanced” stages of proficiency-based learning, also sometimes called competency-based learning.
