The New York State Education Department does not collect data on suspension lengths, but public records requests to 17 of the state’s largest school districts uncovered more than 6,200 suspensions of more than 20 days from 2017-18 to 2021-22. Rochester City School District recorded the second most, with 854. Our first go-to is not suspension.

It’s the first time this kind of data has been compiled and analyzed nationally, and some of the spending gaps are extreme. Most districts didn’t budget in a way that allowed comparisons of school-level spending. The data was from the 2018-19 academic year, with the exception of Nevada, which has released only the data from 2017-18.
