Innovation is one of those words in higher education that people have come to dread. Or when it has meaning, it is merely code for "unfunded mandates" or "unpaid labor" This is all too bad, because I think innovation in higher education is a noble idea. Administrators love it.

Last fall I started my first day on the job as an embedded faculty member with a corporation—as a scholar-in-residence at Steelcase Education. But don’t be too impressed by the title; according to the employee system, I was just an intern. Let me be clear that this is not about “running higher education like a business.”
