In this file photo from 2014, veteran teachers attend a Blended Learning Institute workshop in Manhattan. Families who needed devices for their kids also picked up Chromebooks. The rest of the day was devoted to reviewing the academy’s virtual learning plan and training teachers for the move from classroom to screen.

The foundational technology pieces – Chromebooks, internet, assessment platforms – are stabilized at most Oakland schools. However, the school environment, in terms of teacher support and space for using technology to support learning, is not as strong.This impacts the level of capacity teachers have to bring technology into the classroom.

Supporting instruction while learning about how mobile devices are best used in the classroom happened very quickly for me and I was constantly adapting and adopting new ideas. At the end of the 2013-2014 school year CCS had a marvelous “problem.” The computer lab was next to the other three kindergarten classrooms.
