As a freshman, she constantly got into fights, and spent long hours in a disciplinary classroom. A 2011-12 survey found an average of 9 percent of students nationwide had repeated at least one grade; in Louisiana, the average was 23 percent. Most students lost months or even years of school time after Katrina hit in 2005.
