Report that says online learning growth is slowing misses big picture

For 12 years, the Babson Survey Group in partnership with other organizations, including the Online Learning Consortium (formerly the Sloan Consortium), has done critical research into the growth of online learning in American higher education that it publishes in the report Grade Level: Tracking Online Education in the United States. But as of late, the research has suggested that the growth of online learning is flattening.

In the case of Florida, that movement started with the Florida Virtual School (FLVS) in 2003, which only receives money when students successfully complete a course. As online learning has grown, the vision of modularizing parts of the school and classroom experience to customize a student’s education has grown in popularity. The families who send their children to micro-schools often want an option other than home schooling that will personalize learning for their child’s needs.

Among high school students, 58 percent said they now use their own mobile device at school to support learning activities. Digital equity and access, particularly outside of school, remains an issue important to administrators.
