IBM boasted a partnership with the Sesame Workshop to build “ cognitive learning ” apps. Founded in 2008 by a former Kaplan executive Jose Ferreira, Knewton was one of the most heavily funded ed-tech startups of the decade. He told NPR in 2015 that Knewton’s adaptive learning software was a “mind-reading robo tutor in the sky.”
