Our English Department uses Socratic seminars as an assessment tool. When the Socratic seminar is the culminating assessment, students are expected to prepare for the activity ahead of time as they would for a written test. Before the assessment, the teacher provides a set of thematic questions students are responsible for addressing the day of the Socratic seminar.

Large plenaries are presented with guest speakers in lecture theatres, and then they are split into 6 or 7 smaller seminar groups where discussion, debate, and other forms of discursive learning are supported. When students are split up for seminars, and where the seminars run simultaneously, Twitter is used as an addiional medium of communication, and ideas are shared between groups.

This dynamic preconference seminar features 12 speakers who will each present their approach to effectively working with emerging technologies to support teaching and learning. This was the task students were asked to perform during a student led seminar earlier today. If you had to design a robot to replace a teacher what would look like and what would it be able to do? This was how it worked: Three groups of students were each asked to design their robots and post them using the web sharing tool Nearpod. Everyone designed robots in the shape of androids.
