Lightning in a Bottle: My GTAdmin Experience

A Principal's Reflections

'As I sat in the Houston airport waiting for my flight back to Newark, I couldn’t help but to sit and reflect on my experience at the first ever Google Teacher Academy for Administrators. The conference was held on March 5, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. This was by far the most intense, and rewarding professional development venture that I have ever been a part of.

Social Media In The Classroom.

The Web20Classroom

'Recently at NCTIES Kevin Honeycutt spoke on Personal Learning Networks. I did not attend the session however a quote from it, tweeted and retweeted several times really resonated with me (and several others). He said, "I am smart. But with my PLN, I am brilliant!" So true! The connections we make with those in our PLN help to make us brilliant. I have people in my PLN from all corners of the globe that I know I can call upon when I have a question, need feedback on a project or just to "talk sh

Defining culture

Connecting 2 the World

Perhaps one of the most difficult things in speaking of culture is determining what we mean by "culture." Depending on the discipline, culture can be a tool, a level of cognition that contains values, language, methods of communication, shared processes and understanding, and "world view" based on history, shared experience, and the environment, or a perception of the social structures within which people function (Anthrobase, Culture) However, anyone who has crossed culture boundaries or lived

Winds of Change: Student Style!

A Principal's Reflections

'This morning I had a breakfast for all members of student government. Over the course of the year I like to have at least three meetings like this to hear their ideas on the culture of New Milford High School and ways to improve it. My main objective is to empower them to be catalysts of change and leave a lasting impact on the school. In the past, the meetings consisted of the students eating and socializing, followed by a discussion of events that they would like to see happen, most of which

Reflecting on My Library Web Presence - It's Never Too Late to Start

The Daring Librarian

'The recent TL Cafe Webinar on Web Presence got me to thinking about my slippery slope to a web presence of late. Early on in my tech career I chose to create an Electronic Portfolio because it seemed silly to print out paper colour copies of web pages I made for kids and teachers for lessons to put in a 3 ring binder with plastic page protectors. (and because there weren''t any rules for it - since I was the first in my county and I could go my own way!

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Reflections on NCTIES

The Web20Classroom

'Last week I attended the North Carolina Technology In Education Society''s Annual Conference. For 3 days almost 2000 educators from across the southeast gathered in Raleigh, NC to share, produce and learn about technology in education and have a little bit of fun. I spent the weekend reflecting on each of the sessions (both formal and informal) that I attended and I wanted to share my learning with everyone.
