Librarians in the Shawnee Mission School District are making way for “ the maker movement ,” and some worry where that story is going. The Ray Marsh Elementary School directory lists Bombeck as “librarian” because she is state-certified to be one. The movement, taking place nationwide, is more about robotics than reading.

Elizabeth Forward School District leaders, for example, knew it was time to innovate when local employers informed them the district had hundreds of entry-level coding jobs that needed to be filled. VPS students have access to diverse courses such as coding, Python, robotics, and electronic applications, to name a few.

I am beyond elated – our PreK-6 elementary school received monies, through our district’s Computer Science Resolution 2025, to create a STEAM (science, technology, arts, math) makerspace. Maker education needs to be intentional. I never thought our Title 1 school would get the opportunity to create such a space.

As community makerspaces begin to take root in Ontario’s elementary schools , students are behaving better. They are learning to be thinkers, innovators and problem-solvers rather than mere consumers of information. They arise from the wider maker movement and they are emerging now in formal education settings globally.

Now, do you use robots? What about robotics? In my class, we use the Sphero robot quite a bit. See Top Tips for Teaching with Robots Using Sphero. We do use LEGO Mindstorms with like a couple kids here and there will LOVE to work with LEGO Mindstorms, and I have a robotics club that will use those. Leah: We do.

Elementary and middle school students will be able to attend field trips and summer camp programs at the space to gain exposure to project-based learning experiences with high-tech tools.
