Favorite Chrome Extensions
/ Tony VincentExtensions for Chrome are little programs that add functionality to Google's web browser. Almost all extensions are free, and you can find and download them from the Chrome Web Store.
If you're logged into Chrome, then the extensions you've installed follow you on any computer. Unfortunately, extensions don't work in the Chrome app on tablets and phones.
Extensions are found on the right side of Chrome toolbar. If you get too many extension icons for your liking, you can right click individual icons and choose Hide in Chrome menu. Hidden icons are moved from the toolbar to under the Chrome menu (the three dots).
To hide all extensions, click between the omnibox and the first extension icon. Then drag to the right. You can access the hidden icons in the Chrome menu.
You might as well uninstall unused extensions. To delete an extension, right click its icon and choose Remove from Chrome.
I've created graphics for 10 of my favorite extensions. Each graphic is linked to the extension's page in the Chrome Web Store for easy installation. This listing is by no means complete, and I'll continue to add extensions as I create new graphics. Feel free to tell about an extension you highly recommend in the comments.
A word about permissions...
Most extensions require permissions at the time of installation. Sometimes an extension requires you to allow it to “read and change all the data on the websites you visit.” That seems excessive. It turns out that many extensions ask for this type of permission. Read LifeHacker's article Why Do Chrome Extensions Need to Access All My Data? for an explanation.
Need a quick and easy way to insert a photo from a computer’s webcam? Perhaps you’re looking for a replacement for the “Take a snapshot” method of inserting an image into Google Slides? The Webcam Screenshot extension is free in the Chrome Web Store and can come in handy. After it’s installed, simply click the extension’s icon and a new tab opens. You’ll have to click to allow camera access the first time you open the extension. Then you’ll see a live view from the webcam on the left side of the screen. After clicking the Make Photo button, a snapshot (which is labeled as a Screenshot) is displayed on the right. If you’re not happy with the snapshot, you can click Make Photo again and the snapshot is replaced with a new one. When you are happy with a snapshot, right-click the photo and choose Copy. Then you can paste the photo into Google Slides or into other documents. Alternatively, instead of copying, you can click Save to Disk to download the photo as a PNG file.
