Free Online Workshop – Supporting Struggling Readers

If students struggle with reading, they struggle in ALL classes. This online workshop takes place in Google Classroom. You will need to use a personal Google account (such as a .gmail.com) to access the workshop. Your school district email most likely blocks you from joining with your school email.

Read&Write by TextHelp

Assistive technology to help students to make sense of words that are unfamiliar to them. Reading the text, including text from images, is a feature available in Read&Write.

Read&Write is free for teacher accounts. Be sure to fill out the Form to gain free access with your school email.

Immersive Reader and Microsoft Edge

The Chromium Microsoft Edge browser is not your Internet Explorer. It is based on Chrome and does some amazing things to support student learning. Immersive reader is built right into Microsoft Edge. One of the many features of Edge that supports struggling readers is focus mode that will show one line of text at a time.

Use a Lexend Font

The font we choose can possibly help students who struggle with reading. Consider using a Lexend font for your documents.

Newsela

I am passionate about using current events to teach content. Something printed textbooks can not provide is a context of what is happening in the world today. Newsela not only provides students with current news articles, it allows them to adjust the Lexile level
