The Professional Learning Sweet Spot

A Principal's Reflections

For the better part of my educational career, I always referred to any type of learning to assist me as a teacher or administrator as professional development (PD). For the most part, this consisted of attending mandatory district “PD” days, professional learning communities (PLC)’s or approved off-site experiences such as conferences, workshops, or webinars. Through the use of social media, I realized that I didn’t really need to be “developed.”

9 Ways to Upgrade Professional Learning in Your District

Tom Murray

The notion of “effective professional learning” is something that has been discussed for decades. A comparison in the philosophies of today’s school districts yields results that falls across a continuum of who controls the learning. Although recent studies indicate that the top-down, one-size-fits-all, hours-based, sit and get approach to professional learning shows little-to-no impact on student achievement, many districts continue down this path.

Why Connect?

A Principal's Reflections

I was honored to have been interviewed for Educational Leadership, ASCD's flagship magazine, on the power of Twitter as part of a Personal Learning Network (PLN). As you will see, the true power of connected learning is what you glean from the people you engage with. When and why did you decide to get involved on Twitter? My “ah ha” moment came in March of 2009 after having read a newspaper article about Twitter in the Staten Island Advance.

Learning Transformed Course

A Principal's Reflections

The reaction to Learning Transformed has been truly humbling. Tom Murray and I have watched many book studies and Twitter chats unfold since the release of the book in June of 2017. All of these experiences empowered us to think about and then create a deep learning experience that could be easily accessible to all educators across the globe. Below you will see how the course is structured as well as learner outcomes.

How to deliver PL that really works

eSchool News

I recently chatted with Kathy Dyer, NWEA’s manager of innovation and learning, professional learning design, about how to connect professional learning (PL) to student outcomes and how to best support teachers. According to Dyer, quality PL that sticks with learners is when people learn with , from , and for each other. The good teaching strategies we use with kids are good strategies for teachers to use to learn as well,” she says.

Stories Link Us Together

A Principal's Reflections

When I work with schools, especially in a coaching role, I routinely ask educators to share with me how they are empowering students to own their learning or ways in which they are transforming teaching, learning, and leadership. With an array of social media tools at our disposal, every educator should aspire to be the storyteller-in-chief. Once I started drinking the Twitter Kool-Aid back in 2009 I quickly learned the error of my ways.

Why Teacher Recruitment Needs to Change

In Utah, Governor Gary Herbert addressed his state’s teacher shortage recently with the following plea to his fellow residents via Twitter: "Consider becoming a teacher; it is a noble profession.". Teachers have the largest in-school impact on student achievement.
