I’ve had a lot of questions in the last few months about STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) in the classroom. STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and covers an immense range of subject areas. High school lab studies typically concentrate on solely the scientific method.

Steve Jobs said in his final Apple keynote introducing the iPad 2, “It’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our heart sing.”. Or, exploring areas of social studies with the arts is a very, very easy way. They were studying magnets in science.

For example, we use in my 8th-grade science class Book Creator for students to develop everything from science lab reports to personal studies that they do — like individual investigations — and even just topic research. So we use the Paper 53 app on our iPads. Tools to build eBooks to demonstrate understanding.

You just download it on Google Play or iTunes and use it with your touch Chromebook or iPad after listening to Tom Mullaney share how it works. But also on iPads and on Chromebooks that have the Play Store enabled, which is where education Chromebooks are going. Your kids could do this on an iPads tomorrow. Don’t get worried.

Vicki: And Marina, from what I’ve read about young children and technology, the tactile piece is so important because so many adults don’t seem to understand the virtual world in an iPad or in an iPhone or whatever. Try to integrate into math, into science, into social studies, into language. Try to bring a playfulness into coding.
