Today, our library makerspace has developed into a 21st century learning laboratory, with funding from grants and through the generosity of individuals and organizations that support our DonorsChoose projects. In 2013, I began creating a makerspace in our library with only recyclables such as yogurt containers, bottle caps, and toilet paper tubes that I had been saving over the summer. You don’t need power tools and 3D printers to start a makerspace. Instead, get creative.

A few years ago, while working as a teacher librarian at Templeton Elementary School in Oregon, I had the opportunity to redesign the school’s library website to include digital resources for the students to use as part of a shift to 1:1 iPad learning. Three years later, I’m replicating this model for the entire district, building a Library Learning Commons where all students have digital access to curated, shared resources in conjunction with full-scale 1:1 learning.

When funding for the library at the Woodland Hills Development Center in Nashville, Tennessee, was slashed in 2015, the staff there reached out to their local public library for help. The Nashville Public Library (NPL) got the teens at Woodland Hills set up with library cards, which they use often.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Library of Congress announced the launch of three new apps for Web and mobile, developed by educational organizations that were supported by an LOC grant for app development. When we first started participating, classes came to the library to try out an hour of code. It was fun to see something that started in the library spread into general classrooms. This year we had classes from every grade participate in Hour of Code in the library (including PreK next week). Students worked on coding all over the library.
