Access State-Reviewed Instructional Materials with SETDA’s Dashboard

Now education decision makers across America can see detailed reviews compiled in multiple states, to facilitate the evaluation and purchase of print and digital materials for students and teachers. A pilot program of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) has made 12 states’ reviews of secondary math and language arts materials available, with a wide range of K-12 resources from these and other states to follow.

While it’s possible to build a complete course from OER, the finished product often lacks the scaffolding found in courseware authored by single author/editorial/product teams. These are purchasing programs in which “institutions are signing up whole classes of students to automatically receive digital course materials at a discounted rate, rather than purchasing individually.” While everyone wants educational materials to be less expensive, lower costs are the least interesting thing about digital, networked learning. And obviously, both inclusive access and OER are about solving the cost problem.

Now, though, some states are going back to the beginning and rethinking how they review instructional materials and allocate funds to ensure that they are focused on the realities of the 21st century classroom.

Typically, at the beginning of the school year, teachers have limited information about their students; they have to build a profile of their students over time, which wastes instructional hours when the they could be developing more targeted lessons and growth plans. Prior to joining the team at SETDA, she served as the chief academic and digital learning officer for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the first senior state leadership position of its kind in the nation.
