100 Prompts for ChatGPT

Previously I wrote a popular blog post on 100 prompts for teachers to ask ChatGPT. In this OTIS workshop I will be expanding on how teachers can use ChatGPT to support students. ChatGPT has been a lifesaver for me this year to allow me to more efficiently do my job.

Supporting Students

Teachers play a multifaceted role in supporting student learning, and tools like ChatGPT can be harnessed to further enhance these support mechanisms. Here are ten ways teachers support students and how ChatGPT can assist in each area:

1. Facilitate Active Discussions:

Teachers: Encourage students to debate, discuss, and share their viewpoints.

ChatGPT: Can provide a variety of perspectives or questions on a topic, helping teachers craft engaging discussion prompts.

2. Curate Personalized Resources:

Teachers: Differentiate materials based on each student’s needs and interests.

ChatGPT: Can suggest resources across a wide range of topics and levels, aiding in the personalization process.

3. Project-Based Learning:

Teachers: Implement hands-on projects to promote deeper understanding.

ChatGPT: Can offer ideas, guidelines, or research aids for various projects, becoming a tool students consult during their explorations.

4. Promote Critical Thinking:

Teachers: Pose challenges that require students to analyze, evaluate, and create.

ChatGPT: Can generate thought-provoking scenarios or problems for students to tackle, stimulating their critical faculties.

5. Continuous Feedback Mechanism:

Teachers: Offer consistent, constructive feedback rather than just grades.

ChatGPT: Can be a supplementary tool for students to clarify and further understand feedback, by providing explanations or additional resources.

6. Encourage Self-Directed Learning:

Teachers: Empower students to take charge of their own learning journeys.

ChatGPT: Acts as an accessible tool for students to ask questions and dive deeper into topics on their own time.

7. Integrate Interdisciplinary Learning:

Teachers: Link concepts across subjects to provide a holistic understanding.

ChatGPT: Can offer insights that connect disciplines, showing the interwoven nature of knowledge.

8. Collaborative Learning:

Teachers: Set up group tasks that foster teamwork and peer-to-peer teaching.

ChatGPT: Can assist group activities with brainstorming prompts, collaboration tool suggestions, or by acting as a quick fact-checker.

9. Connect Learning to the Real World:

Teachers: Highlight real-world applications of theoretical concepts.

ChatGPT: Can provide up-to-date examples, anecdotes, and career insights related to academic topics, bridging the classroom with the outside world.

10. Well-being and Emotional Support:

Teachers: Prioritize students’ emotional and mental health, integrating well-being into the learning process.

ChatGPT: While not a substitute for human empathy, ChatGPT can offer resources, mindfulness exercises, or general knowledge about emotional intelligence and mental well-being.
