Building the Right Infrastructure to Support Mobile Learning

techlearning

As they go “all-in” on digital learning, schools are demanding more from their networks. The shift to personalized and inquiry-based learning not only engages students more effectively, it depends on efficient technology. First as consumers and then as educators, schools are committing to mobile technology as their preferred method of digital interaction. They’ve grown up tech-savvy and prefer to do everything on mobile devices.

It's Not a Technology Issue

A Principal's Reflections

Technology still gets a bad rap in many education circles. This ends up resulting in the formation of rules and policies that severely restrict or prohibit student use of mobile technology and social media as tools to support and/or enhance learning. Even with the proliferation of technology across all facets of society, we still see schools moving at a snail’s pace (if at all) to adapt, or better yet evolve, to a digital world.

Why are some students not as quick to move from a handy notebook to an app on an iPad or some other mobile device when taking notes? Different student learning styles. Additionally, when using technology, students can also record sound bites from the lectures, which can be a great tool to bridge the gap for ESL and other students. With technology, notes can be shared with the click of a button, and as long as they are saved or backed up it’s pretty difficult to lose them.

Tips for BYOD Equity

A Principal's Reflections

With the growing access that students now have to technology at home, educators are seizing this opportunity to increase access in the classroom. For cash strapped districts BYOD seems like the logical solution to leverage the mobile devices students have to enhance learning, increase productivity, conduct better research, address critical digital literacies, and teach digital responsibility. After all, it is not about our (adult) learning, but our students.

The Future is Here: Take Advantage of It

A Principal's Reflections

At New Milford High School we have begun to leverage technology that many students possess. This has led to a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) initiative, where students are encouraged to bring in their mobile learning devices, which include cell phones or personal computing devices (laptops, tablets, iPod Touches, eReaders, etc). We highly value equity in terms of access to technology. The mobile learning revolution is upon us.

Advancing Mobile Phones as Learning Devices

A Principal's Reflections

This morning I read a great article on PBS Media Shift by Audrey Watters entitled " Why Schools Should Stop Banning Cell Phones, and Use Them For Learning." Fortunately for me I have already begun to work with my staff and students to transform the teaching and learning culture at New Milford HS as it pertains to cell phones as mobile learning devices. By the end of last school year many more teachers were incorporating mobile learning devices into their instruction.

Getting to Know Celly

A Principal's Reflections

As we continue to move further to enhance our Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) initiative at New Milford High School we are continuing to look for cost-effective resources to support this endeavor. It can also be used to establish study groups called "cells" where a constant activity stream is generated. Groups can also be created for specific clubs/activities or to manage field trips. I am a huge fan of using mobile learning devices (i.e.

6 tips for a successful one-to-one rollout

eSchool News

It’s a fairly massive undertaking if done correctly, because before school leaders and educators even choose a device, they have to outline teaching and learning goals and find the right digital content to support those goals. One of the first steps is to figure out what you want teaching and learning in your district to look like. Logical next steps are to determine the tools and actions to get you to that place, as well as involving all stakeholder groups along the way.
