Memory Machines: Learning, Knowing, and Technological Change

Hack Education

Let me make sure I’m clear here – I’m interested in the “push,” in the stories we tell about machines more so than the technology underpinning the machines themselves. They’re part of our cultural imaginary as much as they are about a technological reality that we face today. There are powerful narratives being told about the future that insist we are at a moment of extraordinary technological change. The creation of the library.)

How Much Tech Support Is Enough

There is no box

What straight up device to tech ratios miss are factors such as the distance between schools, number of computer labs per school, number of mobile devices vs. fixed desktops vs. virtual desktops vs. iPads, device age, dispatch or site based support models, tech skill levels and many more. Sharing tech support isn’t realistic in a technology rich environment. Our end user tech support layers now look like this: 1 6 hour, 10 Month Library/Media Site Tech per Elementary School.

Creating Empathy with Coding

I’d like to take the conversation deeper to explore how this kind of technology can do more than create interactive narratives and how it can teach challenging science topics, how it can simplify complex math concepts, and how it can build empathy to broaden our students’ understanding of world cultures. I did this to make the slide deck more mobile friendly. We normally hold our phones vertically, so this app is more of a mobile app.
