A Principal's Reflections

First and foremost, make the time to learn, grown, and get better as opposed to finding the time. There is nothing more important to an educator, outside of working with kids, than professional learning. Through social media a Personal Learning Network (PLN) provides a great antidote to the age-old time excuse. You can now learn anywhere, with anyone, at anytime you want for free. Consider flipping your faculty meetings.

They desperately sought time during the school day to engage in professional growth opportunities, learn how to integrate Web 2.0 tools, and develop their own Personal Learning Networks (PLN’s). The inspiration for this idea came from Google’s 80/20 Innovation Model where engineers are encouraged to take 20 percent of their time to work on something company-related that interests them personally. A great deal was learned after I reflected on year one of the PGP.

In education, the common objective is usually to learn specific content, skills or competencies within defined areas. Ostensibly, learning is an individual goal, and each student does tend to learn in their own way, using their own favoured approaches and tools. We refer to this as personalised learning ( a video explains ). Collaborative learning does not undermine or contradict personalised learning. Learning is learning.

It was run like a flipped classroom where class members read, tested and experimented from resources available in the weekly syllabus.

I started my Twitter account with a plan and focus to use it to develop collegial sources for my professional learning. Using Twitter for professional learning requires a collaborative mindset. Each of those follows is a person.

It is not that our students are actually learning differently per se, but the environment in which they are learning is dramatically different. If students cannot learn the way we now teach or in the conditions that are prevalent, maybe we need to teach the way they learn and create a school environment that more closely aligns with their world. Effective digital learning environments focus on learning outcomes as opposed to the tools themselves.
