This is where context matters most for the OER movement.

OER Pioneer David Wiley Predicts All Community Colleges Will Dump Traditional Textbooks By 2024

Edsurge

David Wiley, a pioneer of open education resources who co-founded Lumen Learning , a for-profit company that supports OER efforts, sees one place where textbooks could actually be vanquished by openly licensed alternatives: community colleges. It was very different from the physical calculators that you had to wait your turn to use at my elementary school. And there’s so many nonprofits in the OER space already, and there are only a couple of big funders in the space.

VR, PBL, and OERs: Four High Hopes for Learning with Edtech in the New School Year

Well, I’ve spotted some tools and strategies that have amazing potential to empower students and teachers to engage and learn more with the world beyond their school. Another student could find photographs of places or inventions he wants to study and then create augmented reality-triggered videos of himself explaining what he’s learned. A couple of years ago, my high school students created their own scavenger hunt with QR codes , and loved learning from one another that way.

Rather than a single book or set of books, most basal programs now include a number of materials to facilitate learning. In addition, the number of schools and districts using OER continues to rise. With the continued emphasis on reading at grade level by third grade, schools are looking for their elementary materials to focus on phonics. Of course, states are investing in technology devices and infrastructure, but also in data-driven learning.
