Of OER and Platforms: Five Years Later

Iterating Toward Openness

Five years ago, in an essay called 2017: RIP OER? , I pondered whether this year would be the end of OER. The bulk of my concern was expressed in these two paragraphs: Open education currently has no response to the coming wave of diagnostic, adaptive products coming from the publishers. There’s certainly no one funding next gen OER. Much has been written about 2012 being “the year of OER.” ” Let’s hope it’s not the year OER peaks.

This is part four of my annual look at the year’s “ top ed-tech stories ” Way back in 2012, I chose “ The Platforming of Education ” as one of my “Top Ed-Tech Trends.” At the time, I wrote about the importance of APIs; the issues surrounding data security and privacy; the appeal of platforms for users and businesses; and the education and tech companies who were well-positioned (or at least wanting) to become education platforms.

Storms over liberal education: notes on the 2016 AAC&U conference

Bryan Alexander

It was a powerful gathering of campus leaders and practitioners, organized around a common focus on liberal education. I helped start the conference with a half-day workshop on “How Technology Can Enhance Liberal Education: The State of the Art in 2016.” This last point has been a major theme in this quadrant of American higher education as far back as the 1990s. Consensus was: next steps, the future of tech and liberal education.

Highlights From a Year of Tracking Future Trends in Education

Edsurge

If we look back on 2017 in educational technology, some of the biggest surprises were political and cultural. This is the outcome of a combination of forces: our persistent desire to get more people into and through higher education, and our anxieties about the spiraling growth of student debt and college tuition.
