Station Rotation Virtually? No Way…YES way!

One of the few things I miss from teaching in elementary classrooms, and in person, was the ability to move my students through station rotations. I found that student engagement and productivity soared through the roof and best of all kids left with little to no homework. So this year being as crazy as it was, many teachers were asked to teach remotely. There went the station rotation activities. But no more!

I created this virtual station rotation after completing  #DitchSummit20 over Christmas break. Many wonderful eduleaders shared keen advice on student engagement tools, strategies and pedagogy that can work in a hybrid, concurrent, or full virtual classroom. One thing that really stood out to me was being able to give students choice and color coding. Remember 2C’s : “Choice and Color Code”.

So how do you use this slide deck?

Follow the steps below and have fun!

#1: Plan: which subject(s) and how you would like to structure your stations. Use as you would in class F2F. Key point: timing is everything. With students, keep to maximum 2 activities that can be completed within 10-12 minutes and then rotate.

#2: Keep them accountable: Model for students how this station rotation will work. If you need a slow and easier way to start this rotation definitely try my other slide deck, Spring Choice Board slide deck available for free on my Facebook Page.

#3: Record: Before you set that timer to begin, have students add their names to the station roster. You can decide how many students max for each rotation. This roster helps you know who has been to the individual stations, what work has or is not completed, and how students are being productive during their station.

#4: Timing: Reinforce to students that assignments are to be completed within time allotted. Have a classroom timer set and have it visually displayed for all students to see. This will keep them focused and engaged.

#5: Rewards: Finally after each rotation is complete give students a badge, sticker a Bitmoji Hi -five sticker, or a fun game of PlayBlooket! {Similar to Kahoot but way more fun}

#6: Differentiation: Bonus you can document for your IEPs or ESE students that you have been offering modified, small group work. Data can be shown from the sheet recording of names in small groups, with activities assigned based on mastery or proficiency levels.

I do hope this little tutorial and slide deck will help you as you begin 2021. If you enjoy these resources please be sure to ‘like” my Facebook page. I post more resources there as I create them. One last thing, as Knikole Taylor stated in her #DitchSummit session, “Teachers will always be great teachers, and technology is just a tool to shine more greatness to your teaching “Superpowers”.
