The 21st Century Principal

'“The globalization of information, technological fusion, new strategic alliances, and personal computing power for the masses will transform learning and education in much the same way as it is transforming the way we work and play.” Ted McCain and Ian Jukes, Windows on the Future McCain and Jukes penned that statement in 2001, just before the massive influx of Web 2.0 technologies and the proliferation of smart phones and mobile computing devices.

Switched on Kids

SpeechTechie

'Switched on Kids is a resource from the UK that is a great example of how a simple interactive website, not really designed for SLPs, can make a quick, fun, and educationally relevant lesson. Students can use the site to review sources of energy (an elementary science topic) and identify electrical dangers at home. The graphics and interface are fun and engaging as sort of a guessing game: Language Lens: In addition to aligning with science curriculum, this site would be a great one to develop

Entering the world of "Twitter"

Connecting 2 the World

As many of my loyal readers know, I'd do "twitter". This, however, is about to change as I prepare to teach a course in computer mediated communication next semester. In fact, I don't think I can teach CMC without looking at the type of communication used in twitter and facebook. So for the next few weeks, I will be setting up a twitter account and blog about my journey in trying to figure out 1) how to use twitter; 2) communication strategies for twitter; and 3) how to incorporate it into my cl

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

App Review: Chromie

The Electric Educator

'Chrome has been my primary browser for nearly three years. I love the omni box, lightening load times, and the tabbed browsing. On my iOS devices, however, I have been forced to use Safari-- until now. On May 26 the social bookmarking website Diigo announced that they were launching a Chrome-inspired browser for the iPad. Chromy looks and feels a lot like the Chrome browser including tabbed browsing and an omni box.

Three Cloud-Based Office Suite Alternatives for Schools to Consider

The 21st Century Principal

'As our technology budgets get tighter, the need to look for more and more ways to save money becomes more and more necessary. Recently during one of our district technology meetings, we discussed how much we could save by not purchasing office suite licenses for new computers next year, and the amount of money to be saved was substantial, especially if we took just a fraction of that money to purchase a cloud-based office suite alternative.

Charlotte Observer Gets It Wrong: NC Budget Rewrite Won't Save Education Jobs

The 21st Century Principal

'The article in the Charlotte Observer entitlted, "Budget Rewrite Saves Teacher Assistant Jobs" , is a clear attempt by our political leaders in the North Carolina General Assembly to mask the truth of what their budget cuts are going to do to local school districts. What''s even worse, the Charlotte Observer uses a headline that seems to support the idea that the North Carolina Legislature has somehow magically found funds to save 15,000 or so teacher assistant jobs.

In Celebration of Ralph Waldo Emerson's 208th Birthday

The 21st Century Principal

'May 25, 2011 marked the 208th birthday of poet, essayist, lecturer, and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. As a former English teacher and lover of literature, Emerson is one of my literary heroes. I still treasure my copy of his complete essays. No other author has influenced my own world view than him, yet that sounds in some ways anti-Emersonian, for he writes extensively about the importance of not relying on bards or sages in discovering truth.
