A Principal's Reflections

'After a semester long pilot program with the senior class during the spring of 2011, we rolled out our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program to the entire student body in September. Throughout the entire 2011-2012 school year, we worked to refine our approach, implementation, and learning outcomes for the program. The model that we developed is customized, based on our student body and overall objectives of the program.

The Lone-Nut Leader

The Web20Classroom

'Watch this video. Did you really watch the video or are you just keeping reading? Come on, watch it. I promise you will like it. (This is my favorite You Tube video by the way.) Now ask yourself some questions. 1) Do you have guts? This guy is my hero. He felt something inside his soul. The music made him want to move. He didn''t care what others would think.

21st Century School Leader’s Guide to Creative and Innovative Schools

The 21st Century Principal

'“Innovation? We don’t want no stinking innovation,” would perhaps accurately describe many of our educational institutions, including K-12 public education organizations. We’ve all worked in those schools and districts where rules, policies, processes, and procedures mattered more than the people. These same schools literally fight to preserve “the way we do things” to the point of exterminating any thoughts of doing things differently.

After a Day at the Beach

Baker's B.Y.O.D.

'My daughter boogie-ing to the surf. While on the beach watching my 4 & almost 6 year old daughters play in the surf and not just get knocked over for once, I was knocked over by a wave of realization: I take the beach/ocean/bay/marsh for granted. I''ve lived near the ocean my entire life. It has always been there and will continue to always be there.

ScribeFire: Easy to Use Blog Editor for Educators

The 21st Century Principal

'ScribeFire is a simple-to-use blog editor that you can use right within your Chrome, FoxFire or Opera Web browser. So far my testing shows that it works more smoothly than other editors I have used, even Windows Live Writer. Often, when I''ve used Windows Live Writer, I''ve lost format selections and media inserts when I posted to the web. ScribeFire has some features that make it much easier to user for administrators who want to wade into blogging.

My #ISTE12 Reflection, Part 2

'In my last post , I shared some of the big takeaways I had from #ISTE12. This is a continuation of that post, with the focus on these questions: What had the most impact on me at ISTE , and what memories will be most prominent from that week? What new goals would I set as a result of #ISTE12? JoAnn Jacobs , me, Joan Young , & Julie Hembree 6. While ISTE was filled with amazing training, there was something unique about ISTE that I''ve never experienced from any other conference, and that''s

Reciprocity learning

Learning with 'e's

I watched this morning's PLE conference (#pleconf) unkeynote by Grainne Conole and Ricardo Torres Kompen, which was streamed live from Aveiro, in Portugal. In it, they represented a number of perspectives on personal learning environments, including a discussion on the differential between institutionally managed Virtual Learning Environments (or VLEs) and the free tools that learners are now using on the web.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Gaming, Zombies, & Education for the Win!

The Daring Librarian

'Hi! My name is Gwyneth and I''m NOT much of a gamer. Oh, it feels so good to admit that! I mean, as much of a geek grrl as I''ve always been I know I *should* be a gamer but alas, epic fail, not many games have held my attention. Sure, like everyone else I played & aced Angry Birds as soon it came out but I was more of a fan of the plush birdies than getting 3 stars on every level.

The Ethics of Higher Ed Marketing in the US

Connecting 2 the World

As I start looking for colleges/universities for my daughter in the US this year, I'm much more savvy about how US colleges/universities market themselves. My son, a 2 year student at Penn State, went through this last year. As a student/professor for 20 years at US colleges, I went into his higher ed search a bit cocky. After all, I knew what I was looking for in a student, I knew what my student profiles were in multiple departments, I understood the system for college credit transfer, financi

"The Talk" with my Kids (again)

'Being a parent has been the most rewarding event that has happened to me in my forty years. There have been good times and then there have been times that I wish my Mom and Dad would have told me I would experience as a parent. I think it was their way of getting back at me for all of the times that I caused them anguish. And believe me, there are more than you can count on two hands!

I recently presented at a conference with my Plymouth University colleagues Peter Yeomans and Oliver Quinlan. We were to have presented this paper at the annual EDEN Conference held in June in Portugal, but for one reason or another, none of us could make it. This is probably the first time we have presented as a team, and I hope it will be the first of many future conference appearances together.

What is learning?

Learning with 'e's

I was in a meeting with a prospective PhD candidate today and the conversation inevitably led to learning. He pointed out that in his lterature reviews he had uncovered a bewildering number of different, and often opposing learning theories. He was clearly impressed if not a little phased by the huge array of concepts and ideas that theorists had developed to try to explain what it means when we learn something.
