Failing to Fail

A Principal's Reflections

'After reading a great blog post this morning entitled " The Wisdom to Learn From Failure " I quickly began to reflect on how the majority of educational systems are set up in a way where failure, or even the thought of it, is unacceptable. Early on in both my teaching and administrative careers I often found myself trying to avoid failure at all costs.

Lessons From A Smackdown.

The Web20Classroom

'One of my favorite parts of many conferences is the Smackdown. What is a Smackdown you ask? Well, it can take on many differnt forms depending on who you ask but for the sake of our discussion a Smackdown is when people get up and they have a very limited time to share information about their favorite technology tool or trick. It could be anywhere from 60 seconds to 3 minutes.

Must Read NY Times Article on Parenting and Cyberbullying

EdTechSandyK

'Yesterday the New York Times published the article As Bullies Go Digital, Parents Play Catch-Up. It received a great deal of buzz on Twitter and with good reason - it''s one of the best articles on this subject that I''ve seen, touching on many sides of this complicated issue. I reshared it on Twitter and also shared it on Facebook and now I''m blogging about it.

Take Control of Your Public Relations

A Principal's Reflections

'Upon becoming Principal of New Milford High School in June of 2007 I made it one of my primary goals to work hard at sharing with my stakeholders all of the accomplishments centered around teaching and learning occurring on a routine basis. As Principal I was aware of these things, but I was pretty sure that the majority of the educational community was not.

COOL TECH Sighting in Our Library > Video X 3

mauilibrarian2 in Olinda

'Had to share this wonderful video of a person (me) taking a video of one of our students taking a video of a YouTube video. The reason? -- portability of course. The student''s video was to be used to practice for a history project outside , and if you live on Maui where the weather is mild, outside is a much more desirable place to be! Passion For Real Education Reform

The Web20Classroom

'Cross Posted At [link] Depending on who you listen to, this is a really great time to be an educator or a really bad time to be one. On one side you have those that would have you believe our education system is broken, un-fixable, so far beyond repair that they reach at straws trying to find something that will bring us back from the brink of disaster.

Language and Math

SpeechTechie

'Many of us shy away from math curricula and concepts ( or are teaching skills that classroom teachers consider to be mathematical without knowing it, as SLPTanya recently pointed out ), but truth is, there is a TON of language in current math curricula, from vocabulary to sequencing of steps, etc. Valerie Lill, one of my co-bloggers at ADVANCE also wrote a great post on this topic recently.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

A Quick Blog surrounding "A Class Divided"

'Created this page for our history teacher to access the series "A Class Divided". A Class Divided, from PBS The nice thing about this simple set-up is that students can submit comments. SLPs, YouTube and Gingerbread

SpeechTechie

'Hi folks, Two posts to tell you about that recently published elsewhere: Please check out my post on ADVANCE about YouTube, an amazing therapy resource. The post contains strategies for minimizing student distraction when using a YouTube video, and also how you can still avail yourself of the site if your district blocks YouTube. Gingerbread! It''s a reasonably non-sectarian topic for speech and language therapy around the holidays.

Three models for a new higher ed economic model (part 2)

Connecting 2 the World

This has been some time in coming. I wanted to think through some of the options based on my earlier post on this issue. In reviewing all the factors, I wanted to develop an economic or funding model that could be implemented sooner, rather than later. However, I realized that I have seen at least 3 models in use that have been effective over the last decade.
