Exemplary Practices in 21st Century Learning

A Principal's Reflections

'This past Saturday I happened to stumble upon a conversation on Twitter between Tom Whitby , George Couros , and Nancy Blair where they were discussing 21st Century Learning. What fascinated me about this discussion was the fact that they came up with this idea to create a wiki where educators from all over the world could share examples of student innovation.

Tips For Establishing Meaningful Partnerships

A Principal's Reflections

'This past Tuesday I attended our Annual Senior Academic Awards dinner. It was a great event where New Milford High School students received over $65,000 in local scholarships. For three hours student after student came up to the podium to receive various scholarships that they had worked so hard for over the course of four years. One particular presentation provided the motivation for this post.

Ideas To Inspire Technology Greatness!

The Web20Classroom

'Teachers ask me all the time for technology ideas on a wide variety of subject areas. Some days I can get 30 questions from 30 different teachers but they all might be asking the same sort of question. One day it might be questions on how to use Google Earth and the next it might be all Smartboard questions. It sure would be helpful to have list of easy ways that these tools can be used in the classroom.

Give Us Your Summer Reading Recommendations

The Web20Classroom

'It seems like each day that we get closer to students and teachers being out of school for the summer I see a new book recommendation that someone posts on Twitter for others to check out over the summer. Now, I spend lots of time checking out Twitter but I know I miss a lot of great reads that I really should see. So yesterday I created a simple hashtag to keep track of all the recommendations.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Reduce Reading Distractions

SpeechTechie

'Apple web browser (also available for PC) Safari 5 was released yesterday, and has a nice new feature that reduces ads and other distractions on pages that contain articles. Though images related to an article are clearly helpful to our students, having one''s brain pulled in a million different directions definitely is not. This feature only works on article-based pages, though I have no idea how it determines when to work (probably RSS linked)- you will know you have the option when the page

Wonder Pets! Save the Day

'Wonder Pets! Save the Day is a cute interactive arcade-style game from Nick Jr. that would be a good activity for kindergarten-level students. Players get to choose a mission- an animal needs to be saved-dress the pets, assemble their boat, and rush to the rescue! The arcade controls are extremely forgiving, so it''s unlikely that you or the kids would get frustrated.
