My Quick List of iPad Apps

A Principal's Reflections

'Yesterday after receiving my iPad I quickly reached out to my PLN for some suggestions on which apps to download. The key for me is that I will be using this device at work in concert with my administrative team during administrative walk-throughs, observations, and to take notes during meetings (I am sure some other uses will come up as I get more acclimated with the iPad).

#ISTE10, Social Media and Relationships

The Web20Classroom

'It is time for ISTE10 in Denver. Educators from around the world are gathering to discuss and plan the future of edtech, play (some), but most of all, meet people. Conferences are great ways to make lasting connections with people.to grow your personal learning network. Before the conference I had the chance to fly out to Colorado a few days early and spend time with people I had never met.

Helping Students Master Information Analysis

The Electric Educator

'As a teacher I am always looking for new ways to challenge my students and effectively assess their understanding of the concepts that I teach them. Additionally, I want to teach my students to be critical thinkers and be able to analyze and interpret data and information. This is a skill that goes beyond any content area is beneficial to all aspects of life.

New Logo!

SpeechTechie

'I want to thank my friend Greg Nasca for designing the new banner you see at the top of the blog. The original one was something I whipped up with my limited Photoshop skills (from both a design and technical standpoint), and his revision really amped it up and made it shiny, while keeping the font and color scheme that I loved. Thanks Greg!

The Web 2.0 vs. Traditional Learner

A Principal's Reflections

'This morning I came across this amusing, short video that highlighted one of many advantages that digital learners have over their traditional counterparts: This video serves as a great catalyst, in my opinion, to begin listing all of many benefits students receive when immersed in learning environments that combine solid pedagogical techniques with web 2.0/digital resources.

More on Copyright and Fair Use

EdTechSandyK

'Wes Fryer just wrote a great post on Copyright and Licensing Considerations When Importing Audio Books. It''s a perfect extension on the information in my post of June 23rd regarding fair use and copyright. In the scenario from my June 23rd post , the main concern was the fact that the audio recordings of the books would be posted to the web. When you get right down to it, recording a book or ripping a recording of one, even for personal use, breaks copyright law even if it''s never reposted an

Cardinal Points

SpeechTechie

'Often our kids have trouble with left and right, let alone the compass points. I always do some activities with kids as these concepts become important in 2nd grade, but they stay important throughout the elementary, middle and high school years. How is one to understand the early American''s exploration of the West without the sound concept of West?

Writing for learning: deep learning vs. skimming

Connecting 2 the World

My process for writing my dissertation coincides with some of the findings I have for my study. This is especially true as my children are now home for summer vacation and I am constantly being interrupted. I try to write at least two hours a day. Often, this is early morning as typical teens, my kids don't get up until 9 or 10 in the morning. I might be in the middle of a significant idea when they come down, speak to me (I can't complain that I actually have teens that speak to me!

Meeting and Encouraging Teacher Learners Where They Are (Or, Hands off the Mouse!)

EdTechSandyK

'When you work with adult learners, especially adult learners who are teachers, it’s easy to forget that even though they are adults, they are also our students. And like any student, we have to meet them where they are and encourage them to move forward in their learning without frustrating them, judging them, making them feel guilty, or enabling them.

How to motivate students

The Electric Educator

'People are motivated by being pushed, or being pulled. Michael Watkins, author of The First 90 Days , explains: "Push tools, such as compensation plans, performance measurement systems, annual budgets, and the like, motivate people through authority, loyalty, fear, and expectation of reward for productive work. Pull tools, such as a compelling vision, inspire people by invoking a positive and exciting image of the future.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

The title of Anderson''s book stems from the graphic below (click to enlarge) which shows that while a large portion of consumers are condensed at the front of the tail, an equal number of consumers are positioned within the infinitely long end of the tail.
