The Questions I Ask

A Principal's Reflections

'I have been fortunate over the past few days to have attended the Authorspeak Conference. This experience has allowed me to listen to and connect with some of the best minds in education (i.e. Robert Marzano, Rick DuFour, Carol Tomlinson, Doug Reeves, Will Richardson). Additionally, I have been able to network with other amazing educators from all over the world and actively share how we are transforming the culture at New Milford High School.

Cool Classroom Projects With Skype

The Web20Classroom

'A while back I wrote about Skype and how to get started using it. If you are new or thinking about starting definitely check out that post. Then yesterday I saw this: " Calling classes in North Carolina, USA or nearby states to join a book club [link] #wsfcs " So when I saw that tweet I immediately passed it along to all my NC folks. Then I got to thinking.

Google Moderator in the Classroom

The Electric Educator

'Mr. Aaron Hammers uses Google Moderator in his 10th Grade Bible class each week. Google Moderator is a simple crowd-sourcing tool that makes it possible to better understand the thoughts, idea, questions, or motivations of a group, crowd, or audience. One of the best things about Google Moderator is that it is simple. There aren''t many buttons to click and it doesn''t overwhelm you with features and options.

21st Century School Leaders Are Bloggers Too!

The 21st Century Principal

'I have been blogging for almost 4 years now. My first blog was an experiment on Blogger in 2008 that I''m not even sure anyone ever read. I posted to it infrequently, and to be honest, I can''t even remember the name of that blog. I''ve long since taken it down. My second blog was a staff blog I created while principal of a middle school. I used that blog instead of a weekly newsletter, or even an email update like this one.

20th Century flops?

Learning with 'e's

I have just recorded an interview for my local TV station Westcountry Television. The interview was requested because there has been public outcry about one school in Cornwall called Mounts Bay Academy (very close to where I live here in Devon) that has recently purchased an iPad for each of its 900 students. Here is the story as reported by BBC News.

The 21st Century Principal

'One of the ways school leaders can model 21st century teaching and learning is by engaging with their staff in the use of 21st century tools. One category of tools that is quite easy for administrators to implement is communication and collaboration tools. There are quite a few communication and collaboration tools available, but here’s two that I have used with the staff and my school and some ideas on how to use them.

Planning for ASHA Convention? Try the new Personal Scheduler

SpeechTechie

'From experience in attending many ASHA conventions, I know that it''s really important to take some time to plan your time! When you arrive at the convention center, you are likely to be overwhelmed and fall down, or cause someone to fall down, as I have in the past. To prevent unnecessary injuries, ASHA has provided us with a Personal Scheduler tool that will allow you to generate a "draft" list of sessions you might like to attend.

Connected educators

Learning with 'e's

Are you a connected educator? Are you a teacher who has managed to harness the power of social media to connect with peers and experts around the globe? Coming hand in hand with these connections is a whole new culture of learning and teaching. Steven Anderson (@web20classroom) has a lot to say about the connected educator. They are transparent in their thinking, he suggests, and that means that they are not shy in sharing their ideas or giving away their content for free.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Call Me an E-Bibliophile: No More Traditional Books for Me

The 21st Century Principal

'I can announce as of today, I am a completely converted E-Book reader. I haven’t purchased a book in physical form in over five months. For someone who historically purchased four to five books a month, that is a significant change, and I’m sure it makes book publishers nervous. What’s really interesting about my whole e-book experience is that I remember distinctly saying when someone suggested I buy a Kindle, “I just don’t see myself curling up with one of those newfangled devices for a good

These bubble to the top: We''re doing the right thing: Those self-reflections that we ask of our students in papers, presentations, and blogs? They''re all-important , especially in light of the fast pace of our information- and interruption-rich technological world.

Do it yourself education

Learning with 'e's

Reading Edupunks, Edupreneurs and the Coming Transformation of Higher Education by Anya Kamenetz has been fascinating. It's a book that has been recommended to me several times over, so it was long overdue that I laid my hands on a copy. With its lurid red cover and aggressive image of a fist gripping a pencil (I would have suggested an iPod Touch or iPhone instead) while wearing a wrist band that proclaims DIY U, the books holds a lot of promise.

A thousand conversations

Learning with 'e's

I was labelled a 'radical' yesterday by one of my colleagues. Well, bless. I hadn't thought about myself in those terms before, because what I do is instinctive and what I write about seems to be absolutely normal to me. But standing back from me and trying to look in from the outside, I suppose some might think I was slightly out of left field, or that some of my ideas were idealistic.

This is the story behind that photograph. Malcolm McLaren was notorious for a variety of reasons. He was in a relationship with the avant garde fashion designer Vivienne Westwood , introduced fetish-wear, managed various punk rock bands including the Sex Pistols, and was agent provocateur and innovator in the art and music scenes for decades. It could be claimed that he was not only the originator of punk rock, but also one of the prime movers in the New Wave and Hip Hop music genres.
