EdTech4Beginners

I went to an education conference recently, and in one session a maths expert shared ‘Think Boards’ They are a simple but excellent idea, and fit in very well with maths mastery. They basically encourage students to explore numbers or problems in a deeper way. Have a look at some of the templates I have created (see below) – feel free to adapt them I have also included some completed ones, so you can see what they look like when done. * Click to enlarge ^^^.

Giving Students a Voice

Digital Promise

This article originally appeared on Usable Knowledge from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Read the original version here. Among the many things young people have to do to succeed in school is learn to respect procedures they haven’t created or approved. Just think: A teenager sitting in class follows a lesson formulated by her teacher and a curriculum written by distant policymakers. On the walls, posters she didn’t choose inform her of her school’s goals and values.

There are points in our professional lives that change us for the better. I vividly remember one such moment in 2009 when I took a device from a student as he had it out in the hallway. On discoverability

K12 Open Ed

There is a lot of talk in OER circles about discoverability. Much of it deals with metadata schemes and other technical details that may seem arcane to some. The Sleight of Hand of “Free” vs “Affordable”

Iterating Toward Openness

In a recent webinar about OER, organized by one of the major textbook publishers, there was a lot of conversation about whether OER are “free” or “affordable.” ” This conversation was problematic in two ways. Before I begin though, just to be clear, allow me to reaffirm that OER are free, plain and simple, full stop, period. That is literally part of the definition of OER. OER = free + permissions. Problem the First.
