Ed-tech Developers: Share How You Use Research

August 9, 2016 | By

With more and more educational technology tools on the market, schools and universities, the government, and parents all want to know, Which products are effective for which teachers and students?

In response, ed-tech developers are using research to inform the early stages of product design and development, and to conduct evaluations of their products’ effectiveness. Yet, in a crowded marketplace, many of these developers’ efforts remain hidden, and they do not receive the recognition they deserve.

In an effort to commend these pioneers in the ed-tech industry and inspire others to follow in their footsteps, we want to find and share promising examples of how developers use and conduct research as they build and improve their products.

We invite all ed-tech developers to complete an application, and tell us how you use research!

Researchers from Teachers College, Columbia University will review submissions and identify one exemplary entry in each of three categories. These exemplary companies will be highlighted in both Digital Promise and EdSurge publications, and all participating companies will be posted on the Digital Promise site. The three categories are:

  • Learning Sciences: How developers use scientific research on how people learn to inform product design
  • User Research: How developers collect and use information about how people are interacting with their product
  • Evaluation Research: How developers determine whether a product contributes to solving a problem in education

We hope this campaign will inspire other ed-tech developers to incorporate research into their work, and create stronger products to support teaching and learning. Further, we hope to move the industry closer to a big goal: making sure consumers have access to information on which products are effective in which contexts — which district leaders say they need to make better purchasing decisions.

Review the FAQs, and contact us with additional questions. We look forward to sharing the work of many innovative developers this fall!
